Welcome

Welcome to the homepage of Lothiansound Talking Newspaper.

Lothiansound is a weekly audio recording of news and events read mainly from the Edinburgh Evening News. A Scottish charity, based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Lothiansound is run entirely by Volunteers and supplied free of charge to over 600 Listeners. To Listeners who are registered blind or partially sighted, even the postage is free, thanks to the Post Office "Articles for the Blind" arrangement.

Lothiansound was founded in 1988 and sends tapes out 50 weeks of the year. The Volunteers have two weeks holiday at Christmas, which suits the Post office at their busiest time.

Each tape begins and ends with a short piece of music called 'Waiata Poi', played by James Galway, by courtesy of BMG Classics.

Apart from news items, there is a Scottish quiz and notices from like-minded organisations. These can vary from holidays for visually impaired people to audio-description in local theatres or telephone numbers/addresses to contact for useful information.

An annual social evening is held, giving Volunteers a chance to meet one another without the presence of microphones! Listeners also enjoy this opportunity to meet the familiar voices, face to face.

Lothiansound is fortunate to have a band of loyal and hard-working Volunteers and enthusiastic Listeners whose support is invaluable.

If you are interested in becoming a Volunteer or a Listener, or you would like to become a Friend of Lothiansound, please go to the appropriate page by selecting from the menu on the left.
